No 26 years after the disastrous accident at a Bhopal chemical plant, which killed an estimated 25,000 people and counting, a local court today sentenced eight former executives to two years in prison and a 100,000 Indian rupees fine (approx. $2,100/1,800 €).

Don‘t be mad at companies for pretending they‘re Swiss when they‘re not just to avoid taxes. Don‘t be mad at corporations for pretending they‘re from the Marshall Islands to avoid their ships being inspected by someone they‘re not paying. Don‘t be mad at corporations for trying to evade responsibility when they caused disasters.
If you want them to not do those things, don‘t bother being mad at them, they‘re doing what they‘re designed to do. If you want them to not do those things, you have to stop them from doing those thing—or not, if you‘re, say, Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

But where there are severe personal failures there’s also a need for adequate euphemisms to attenuate the gravity of the incident.—And, of course, mockery by hypocrites like myself.

BEST JOB NUMBERS SINCE THE RECESSION BEGAN…. Waiting for the monthly job numbers to be released this morning, I saw the New York Times homepage run a headline that said the „economy shed 11,000 jobs in November.“ I assumed, in all sincerity, it was a typo.
After all, there were plenty of estimates on what to expect. The most optimistic number I saw was 130,000 job losses; the most pessimistic was 169,000 job losses. A total of 11,000 losses just didn’t seem realistic.
And yet, that’s what happened.
The United States economy shed a surprisingly few 11,000 jobs in November, and the unemployment rate fell to 10 percent, from 10.2 percent in October, the Labor Department said Friday. [...]
The pace of job loss has been declining since a peak in January, and some economists say they expect a turning point to come in the late spring or summer, with employers finally adding workers as a recovery takes hold.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics also revised estimates from September and October, and both were better than previously thought.
To put last month’s numbers in the larger context, since the recession began two years ago this month, the single „best“ month for the job market was January 2008, when the economy shed 72,000 jobs. Last month, then, was easily the best month since the start of the recession.
Of course, losing any jobs is bad news, and it’s hard to smile too much with 23 consecutive months in which the economy has lost jobs. To get back to a healthy employment landscape, the economy is going to have to not just climb back above 0, but also start creating about 140,000 jobs per month. We’re quite a ways from that level.
But today’s news is nevertheless the most encouraging we’ve seen in a long time. The unemployment rate has dropped, and the monthly report far exceeded expectations.
Once more, here’s my homemade chart, showing job losses by month, starting in January 2008, a month after the recession began.
Notice how small that bar is on the far-right side of the chart? Does it seem hard to see? That’s a good thing.

Im Independent ist ein interessanter Artikel über die Zusammenhänge zwischen geistiger Krankheit und Kreativität erschienen. Was ist also dran am Klischee über den „verrückten Professor“?
Das bemerkenswerte an diesem Artikel ist weniger die Schlussfolgerung, dass es Zusammenhänge zwischen milden Psychopathologien und überdurchschnittlicher Kreativität gibt, sondern die Idee dass spezifische Störungen mit Kreativität in bestimmten Bereichen einher gehen. So sind beispielsweise autistische Züge förderlicher für mathematische Kreativität denn für künstlerische, welche sich wiederum eher aus schizoiden Eigenschaften speisen kann.

Das Merchandise ein wichtiges Instrument kapitalistischer Wirtschaft ist, ist ja spätestens seit dem Film „Spaceballs“ kein Geheimnis mehr.
Zu einiger Ironie schließt das auch kommunistische Ikonen mit ein. So wurde bereits das berühmte Che Guevara Portrait zu einem der weltweit am meist verbreiteten „Markenzeichen“. Eine neue Stilblüte in diesem Zusammenhang ist nun offenbar „Karl Marx–Das Musical „, welches einem Bericht der BBC zufolge ab nächstem Jahr von der Chinesischen Regierung in Shanghai inszeniert werden soll.

Mein gegenwaertiger Lieblingscomic im WWW ist xkcd.com. Die Comics sind alle ziemlich „nerdy“ wie man hier sagen wuerde. (Was waere eigentlich eine gute Uebersetzung dafuer? „Streber“ trifft es m. E. am ehesten, aber betont nicht genug den eigenartig-verschrobenen Aspekt) Das kommt daher, dass sie stets irgenwelche mehr oder minder obskuren Anspielungen auf Informatik, Mathematik oder andere (Natur-)Wissenschaften machen.–Ist eine wahre Fundgrube fuer Lehrmaterialen und Praesentationen *hint, hint*.
Heute bin ich auf eine hoffnungslos romantische Ausgabe gestossen, die so wunderbar arglos und naiv ist, dass ich sie einfach hier posten muss!

Der eine oder die andere hat es vielleicht gehoert. Ich hab’ die Nachricht zufaellig im Radio mitbekommen: George W. Bush malt im Zusammenhang mit dem Atomstreit mit dem Iran munter einen Dritten Weltkrieg an die Wand.
Nicht nur, dass dies in dieser Form erst einmal recht absurd scheint ist das auch ein vollkommen unangebrachtes und kontraproduktives Vorgehen des mutmasslich maechtigsten Mannes der Welt.
