Corporations are devices created by humans to maximize profit.

This is what corporations do. This is not a bug. This is a feature.

Don‘t be mad at companies for pretending they‘re Swiss when they‘re not just to avoid taxes. Don‘t be mad at corporations for pretending they‘re from the Marshall Islands to avoid their ships being inspected by someone they‘re not paying. Don‘t be mad at corporations for trying to evade responsibility when they caused disasters.

If you want them to not do those things, don‘t bother being mad at them, they‘re doing what they‘re designed to do. If you want them to not do those things, you have to stop them from doing those thing—or not, if you‘re, say, Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

You might remember the first day that we were broadcasting down in the Gulf after the spill, doing the show from there, we had on Democratic Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey to talk about the fact that since the Exxon Valdez oil spill, there‘s been a $75 million cap on what oil companies have to pay in damages after a spill — $75 million. That‘s it. That was exhausted in about the first three seconds of this current disaster in the gulf.

We talked with Senator Menendez that night about his proposal to raise that damages cap from $75 million to $10 billion. That proposal was blocked in the Senate yesterday by Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski from Alaska. Her explanation? She said raising that dollar amount of damages that oil companies would be responsible for in the event of a spill would mean that only the, quote, “biggest of the big oil companies could drill for America‘s offshore resources.”

Think about that argument for a second. She‘s saying making companies responsible for a bigger proportion of the damage they cause when things go wrong would, what, prevent more companies from potentially creating offshore oil spills? Mom-and-pop companies, really — even small businesses should be able to create really large offshore oil spill that‘s cause more than $75 million in damages. She wants to make sure anybody can do the drilling, even if they can‘t necessarily pay for it if something goes horribly wrong.

So if something does go horribly wrong, which does from time to time happen, Senator Murkowski wants to make sure that the oil companies will not have to pay. The taxpayers will.“

But where there are severe personal failures there’s also a need for adequate euphemisms to attenuate the gravity of the incident.—And, of course, mockery by hypocrites like myself.

After all, there were plenty of estimates on what to expect. The most optimistic number I saw was 130,000 job losses; the most pessimistic was 169,000 job losses. A total of 11,000 losses just didn’t seem realistic.

And yet, that’s what happened.

The United States economy shed a surprisingly few 11,000 jobs in November, and the unemployment rate fell to 10 percent, from 10.2 percent in October, the Labor Department said Friday. [...]

The pace of job loss has been declining since a peak in January, and some economists say they expect a turning point to come in the late spring or summer, with employers finally adding workers as a recovery takes hold.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics also revised estimates from September and October, and both were better than previously thought.

To put last month’s numbers in the larger context, since the recession began two years ago this month, the single „best“ month for the job market was January 2008, when the economy shed 72,000 jobs. Last month, then, was easily the best month since the start of the recession.

Of course, losing any jobs is bad news, and it’s hard to smile too much with 23 consecutive months in which the economy has lost jobs. To get back to a healthy employment landscape, the economy is going to have to not just climb back above 0, but also start creating about 140,000 jobs per month. We’re quite a ways from that level.

But today’s news is nevertheless the most encouraging we’ve seen in a long time. The unemployment rate has dropped, and the monthly report far exceeded expectations.

Notice how small that bar is on the far-right side of the chart? Does it seem hard to see? That’s a good thing.

Im Independent ist ein interessanter Artikel über die Zusammenhänge zwischen geistiger Krankheit und Kreativität erschienen. Was ist also dran am Klischee über den „verrückten Professor“?
Das bemerkenswerte an diesem Artikel ist weniger die Schlussfolgerung, dass es Zusammenhänge zwischen milden Psychopathologien und überdurchschnittlicher Kreativität gibt, sondern die Idee dass spezifische Störungen mit Kreativität in bestimmten Bereichen einher gehen. So sind beispielsweise autistische Züge förderlicher für mathematische Kreativität denn für künstlerische, welche sich wiederum eher aus schizoiden Eigenschaften speisen kann.

Nicht nur, dass dies in dieser Form erst einmal recht absurd scheint ist das auch ein vollkommen unangebrachtes und kontraproduktives Vorgehen des mutmasslich maechtigsten Mannes der Welt.

Von Spannungsabbau und Diplomatie mal wieder keine, aber auch gar keine Spur. Statt dessen Greift the kleine Mann aus Texas wieder einmal tief in the demagogische Trickkiste und schuert Aengste um unser aller Leben. Wer um Weltfrieden besorgt sei, muesse diese Bedrohung ernst nehmen und sich fuer einen atomwaffenfreien Iran einsetzen. (Das Interview des Praesidenten findet sich hier)

Kling alles sehr nach „Ich sag’s ja nur!“. Damit mich keiner falsch versteht: Ahmadinejad ist ein gefaehrlicher und moeglicherweise ernsthaft psychotischer Mann. Ohne Frage bin auch fuer einen atomwaffenfreien Iran! Ich gehe sogar noch weiter. Ein effektiver globaler Atomwaffensperrvertrag wuerde die Erde einen bedeutend sichereren Platz machen. Damit kaemen wir dem Weltfrieden einen grossen Schritt naeher. Aber zugegebenermassen ist das Wunschdenken. Allerdings sehen hier die Befuerworter von Kernwaffen mal wieder wie leicht das stets gepriesene Gleichgewicht aus dem Ruder laeuft. Dieses System mag in einem Gleichgewicht sein, aber eben in einem instabilen. Und waehrend nun alle mit dem Iran abgelenkt sind ist es doch nur eine Frage der Zeit bis mal wieder ein Nord-Korea oder Pakistan entsprechende Anlaeufe unternimmt. Und was die Verfuegbarkeit von Drohmitteln bewirkt wissen die Sozialpsychologen ja auch spaetestens seit dem trucking game.

Die Frage ist also nicht ob, sondern wie dies am besten zu bewerkstelligen sei. Und da Versagt das gegenwaertige Vorgehen auf ganzer Linie. „Ich moechte den Druck so hoch wie moeglich halten.“ Wie es ein demokratischer Abgeordneter auf den Punkt bringt: „Es gibt keinen drohenden Dritten Weltkrieg.–Es sei denn wir machen ihn.“ (Die Rede gibt’s hier.) Ich moechte mir ja auch gar nicht anmassen es besser zu koennen. Aber genau deshalb mische ich auch nicht in der internationalen Politik mit! Und mich stoert auch die Art wie wieder einmal mit schmutzigen Tricks und Gefuehlsduselei agiert wird. Denn Denken das macht mued.

Aber das braucht man ja auch nur fuer diejenigen, welche ueberhaupt potentiell subversiv zu denken anfangen koennten. Auf CNN, dem nach eigenen Angaben „most trusted name in news“ (der meist vertraute Name in Nachrichten), kommt unterdessen ein Bericht ueber eine Tankstellen-Schiesserei und dem Geburtstag der aeltesten Bloggerin der Welt. Dritter Weltkrieg? Zumindest in den Nachrichten ist die Welt scheinbar noch in Ordnung.

Und ich sitze hier noch bis Februar fest und frage mich nur: „Was habe ich mir nur bei der Entscheidung gedacht hier her zu kommen?“ Aber zu meiner Rechtfertigung vor mir selbst, kann ich mich damit troesten, dass die Mehrheit der AmerikanerInnen ja fuer einen anderen Praesidenten gestimmt hatten.

Fuer heute lasse ich es damit gut sein.
